A heartfelt tribute to a legendary coach and friend: Rece Davis reminisces about Lou Holtz.
A Legend's Final Chapter
Lou Holtz, the iconic college football coach and ESPN analyst, entered hospice care last month, leaving a lasting impact on the sports world. At 89, his journey is coming to a close, but his legacy lives on.
Rece Davis, a close colleague and friend, shared his thoughts on their bond during a recent College GameDay Podcast episode. "I had a chance to speak with Lou's family and him. Though he couldn't respond, they assured me he was listening. It was a first for us in our decade-long partnership."
Davis emphasized Holtz's loyalty and friendship, stating, "He's been a rock for me and my family. We've cherished his presence at our Thanksgiving gatherings. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Holtz family during this difficult time."
But here's where it gets controversial... Holtz's impact extends beyond the public eye. "There are countless stories about Lou, some known, some private. He's done so much good for so many people."
Holtz and Davis worked together at ESPN from 2005 to 2015, and Davis shared hilarious anecdotes about Holtz's sense of humor.
"A few years back, Lou invited Mark May and me to Augusta for a game. He's a member there, and despite knowing I'm a terrible golfer, he insisted on taking me. Lou and Mark had a bet over 36 holes, and Lou, fresh off neck surgery, won. At Augusta, no cell phones are allowed, but cameras are. So, when they took a picture of Mark handing over the money, Lou said, 'Wait!' He went back to the clubhouse, put on his neck brace, and then posed for the picture, making it look like he beat Mark wearing a neck brace!"
