London Celebrates Women Cycling Heroes for International Women's Day! (2026)

Londoners, it's time to celebrate the women who make cycling shine! 🚴‍♀️

International Women's Day is just around the corner, and we want to honor the female cycling icons who inspire us all. But here's the thing: despite a 43% surge in cycling since 2019, women still cycle less than men. So, we're calling on you, Londoners, to step up and nominate your cycling heroes.

Santander Cycles and Transport for London (TfL) are joining forces to name 10 hire bikes after these remarkable women. These 'cycling stars and unsung heroes' will be celebrated on March 8th, a day to remember.

The London Cycling Campaign (LCC) Women's network has a mission: to make cycling inclusive by 2030. They emphasize the importance of addressing barriers like road safety concerns and bike costs, which prevent women from cycling as much as men.

The LCC Women's network welcomes TfL's initiative, recognizing the desire for safe and increased cycling among women. Only a third of London's daily cycle trips are taken by women, which is why the LCC collaborates with TfL, local councils, and the police to tackle these challenges.

But it's not just about the numbers. Women face unique obstacles like harassment and safety fears. The LCC calls for high-quality, accessible infrastructure to boost women's confidence in cycling, even with their kids. They also advocate for stronger social safety measures, better monitoring, and reporting to combat intimidation and harassment.

TfL is taking action with projects like Cycle Sisters and Cycle Together, aiming to encourage more women and girls to cycle. Plus, there are discounts on hire bikes for students, care leavers, and older Londoners, making cycling more accessible.

So, who are your cycling heroes? Email SantanderCyclesvote@tfl.gov.uk or send your nominations by February 8th. Include their name and a brief explanation of their inspiring impact. Let's make this International Women's Day one to remember for London's cycling community!
