A political storm has erupted in the UK, with Labour launching a scathing attack on Reform UK and its candidate, Matthew Goodwin. The controversy stems from an endorsement by the controversial figure Tommy Robinson, known for his far-right views and anti-Islam campaigns.
Labour, aiming to position itself as the sole left-wing alternative in the Greater Manchester constituency, has accused Goodwin of representing 'toxic politics'. This accusation comes after Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, publicly endorsed Goodwin on his X platform, which has over 1.8 million followers.
The move has put Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, in a tricky situation. Farage has historically kept his distance from Robinson, but now faces a dilemma as Robinson's endorsement could influence the upcoming Gorton and Denton byelection on February 26th.
A Reform spokesperson attempted to distance the party from Robinson, stating, "He isn't welcome in the party." However, Labour has seized the opportunity to highlight the alleged connection between Reform and far-right politics, arguing that Robinson's intervention underscores the importance of the upcoming vote.
"Tommy Robinson's endorsement is a clear indication of Goodwin's true beliefs and agenda," said a Labour campaign spokesperson. "The Greens may not be able to win this byelection, leaving voters with a clear choice: unity and progress with Labour, or division and uncertainty with Reform. Only a vote for Labour can prevent the spread of the toxic politics associated with Reform and Robinson in Manchester."

Goodwin, a former academic turned GB News presenter and hard-right activist, was already a controversial choice for Reform. His recent claim that UK-born individuals from minority ethnic backgrounds may not be considered British has further fueled the fire. When asked about these views at his campaign launch in Denton, Goodwin refused to comment.
Robinson's background is equally intriguing. He rose to prominence as the leader of the English Defence League, an anti-Islam street group initially comprised of football fans from his hometown of Luton. Robinson has a criminal record, including convictions for assault, mortgage fraud, and using a false passport. His appointment as an adviser to Gerard Batten, the former leader of Ukip, even prompted Farage to resign from the party.
Since Elon Musk's acquisition of X, Robinson's profile has grown, especially in the US, where he presents himself as a journalist and campaigner. However, the majority of his content remains far-right in nature, targeting immigrants and Muslims. His influence was evident last September when a protest he organized attracted between 110,000 and 150,000 attendees.
