Controversial calls can make or break a game, and the Baltimore Ravens are feeling the sting after a recent loss. But what exactly happened, and why is everyone talking?
Following a tough 27-22 defeat against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh didn't hold back in his post-game press conference. The primary point of contention? A crucial call that overturned tight end Isaiah Likely's apparent touchdown catch. This play, had it stood, would have given the Ravens the lead in the final minutes. But officials ruled that Likely didn't maintain control of the ball long enough before it came loose.
"The explanation was that the third foot didn’t get down before the ball came out,” Harbaugh stated, clearly frustrated. The Ravens then failed to convert on downs, forgoing a potential field goal that could have narrowed the Steelers' lead to just two points. And this is the part most people miss: the impact of these decisions on the game's outcome.
Harbaugh didn't stop there. He immediately pivoted to another controversial call from earlier in the game. Linebacker Teddye Buchanan was initially credited with an interception of an Aaron Rodgers pass. However, the play was overturned after review, ruling it a catch by Rodgers for a seven-yard loss. Harbaugh's opinion was clear: he disagreed with the call.
"I believe a lot of things,” Harbaugh said, alluding to the rules and the officiating. He argued that Rodgers didn't "survive the ground," a key element in making a legal catch. He was baffled by the ruling, especially considering the time officials had to review the play.
Further fueling the Ravens' discontent was a roughing the long snapper penalty called on defensive tackle Travis Jones during a Chris Boswell field goal attempt. This penalty gave the Steelers a first down, leading to a touchdown. Harbaugh, who could be heard yelling at the officials during the game, reiterated his view that Jones didn't make contact to Christian Kuntz’s head or neck.
"I didn’t see head and neck contact,” Harbaugh emphasized. He pointed out the need for forceful contact in the head or neck area, something he didn't witness.
The Ravens are now 6-7, trailing the Steelers in the AFC North. But what do you think? Were the officials' calls justified, or did they significantly impact the game's outcome? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
