Five Regional Theatres Awarded $100,000 Each Through American Theatre Wing's National Theatre Company Grants

In a bold move to champion regional theatres and the vital contributions they make to American culture, the American Theatre Wing (ATW) has unveiled the five recipients of its esteemed National Theatre Company Grants program. These grants, each valued at $100,000, are designed to bolster the creative endeavors of regional companies that actively support the work of American playwrights.

Regional theatres hold a crucial position in the landscape of American theatre, serving as platforms for innovation and artistic expression. The recipients of this year's grants exemplify such commitment, showcasing inventive strategies to bring American playwrights' work to life. The selected companies are Breaking Wave Theatre Company in Guam, Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey, Goat in the Road Productions in New Orleans, Louisiana, City Theatre in Miami, Florida, and Shabach Enterprise/Fade To Black in Houston, Texas.

This initiative emphasizes that grants must specifically benefit regional venues and focus on the works created by American playwrights. Eligible projects can vary widely and may include co-productions of world premieres, national tours of new works by nonprofit organizations, local debuts of significant plays, innovative approaches to engaging audiences, and educational programs aimed at attracting younger and more diverse crowds with affordable ticket options.

The ATW's goal is to not only uplift living playwrights but also to shed light on the works of playwrights who are no longer living, particularly those whose contributions have not received the recognition they deserve.

The selection panel for the 2025 National Theatre Company Grant recipients includes notable figures in the industry, like Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang, former National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu, and Amanda Dubois, a Tony Award-winning producer. Other influential members include Hattie Jutagir, Crystal Chase, Ayanna Prescod, and Ian Weiss, who bring a wealth of experience and insight to the decision-making process.

As a key player in the national theatre ecosystem, the American Theatre Wing is not only known for founding and co-presenting the prestigious Tony Awards and hosting the Obie Awards but also for addressing all facets of the theatre landscape. Under the leadership of President and CEO Heather Hitchens, the organization continues to promote artistic excellence and sustainability within the theatre community.
