A £3 Million Roundabout: A Recipe for Disaster or a Step Towards a Brighter Future?
That's the question on everyone's mind in Folkestone, where a recent town center roundabout revamp has sparked a fiery debate. The project, which includes new cycle lanes and zebra crossings, has been branded "downright dangerous" by many drivers.
The controversial changes, situated at Radnor Park near Folkestone Central railway station and the Park Inn pub, were initially touted as a "significant improvement" by the Folkestone and Hythe District Council (FHDC). They promised better signage and improved connections for pedestrians and cyclists. But after months of disruptive construction, costing a hefty £3 million, motorists are now calling the finished product "an accident waiting to happen."
One of the main concerns revolves around a raised curb, currently marked off by traffic cones, separating the new cycle lane from the road. Julie Howell expressed her frustration on social media, recounting a near-miss incident. Others, like Sheila Cinelli, shared similar experiences, highlighting the difficulty of seeing the curb, especially in the dark and rain.
But here's where it gets controversial... The design includes a single lane merging from two, which is causing confusion and near misses. John Scale Modeller pointed out the potential for car damage, noting that he'd already seen vehicles collide with the curb. Rita Betteridge and Deborah Jones echoed these concerns, with the latter highlighting the proximity of a zebra crossing to the roundabout, raising safety concerns.
Kent County Council (KCC), responsible for implementing the changes for FHDC, explains that the cones are temporary, guiding traffic until the final layout is complete. The ultimate design will feature a single lane with a cycle island. Despite the complaints, KCC states that there have been no reported safety incidents related to the curb since the roundabout opened.
The New Folkestone Society, while sympathetic to drivers' struggles, suggests the community is struggling to adjust to the new layout. Vice-chair Mark Hourahane expressed his understanding of the public's concerns, questioning the project's overall value.
This roundabout revamp is part of FHDC’s larger £20 million 'A Brighter Future' scheme, funded by the government's Levelling Up fund. The project also includes the relocation of the town's bus station, which has also been met with criticism. Some argue that the money could have been better spent on reopening the Road of Remembrance, which has been closed for almost two years due to landslides.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the backlash, some residents remain optimistic, believing the benefits will become clearer over time. The project is over a third complete, with an estimated completion date in the summer of 2026. However, as construction continues, the community's frustration is growing, particularly regarding the town's lackluster Christmas decorations. Folkestone Town Council has chosen to focus on light installations in specific areas, citing ongoing construction as the reason for the limited display. This decision has been met with criticism, with some residents calling the lights “pathetic.”
FHDC maintains that the project aims to "regenerate Folkestone town centre into a safer, more welcoming place," with the roundabout works playing a crucial role. The new design includes safer crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists, providing improved access to the park and train station.
